SOFLOPO:
Towards Systematic Software Exploitation for Low-Power Designs

Abstract: The SOFLOPO project has
dealt with the software-related energy-optimization for embedded applications.
Based upon the fact that software has a conceivable impact upon the total energy
dissipation, we tried to minimize this impact, using assembly-level code
transformations. The instruction costs were obtained through the
tried-and-tested methodology of physical measurements. Two target processors
have been selected: the ARM7TDMI RISC processor and the Motorola DSP56156 DSP
processor. The obtained results were verified upon a commercial implementation
of the IEEE 802.11 wireless multimedia protocol.
